Renewable Resources and Wood

The use of fossil raw materials is a phase-out model. That is why we analyze the quantity, availability and quality of renewable resources such as wood, rapeseed, corn or straw. We research how such raw materials and residues can be processed into high-quality industrial feedstocks, and we evaluate biobased value chains.

Raw material monitoring wood

Wood is one of the most important renewable raw materials. But where is wood used? And how large is the volume of the individual product ranges? The available statistics show considerable gaps in some cases.

Focus Dossier

Bio-refinery processes an Bio-based products

The efficient production of biobased chemicals and products in biorefineries is one of the key challenges of the bioeconomy. We develop and evaluate various biorefinery processes for the use of agricultural and forestry raw materials.

Complete Dossier

  • Flußdiagramm des Prozesses der Primärraffination, zusätzlich Rohstoffe und Produkte

    Biorefinery processes

We are working on strategies for the complete utilization of renewable resources for the production of platform chemicals and energy. In this context it is particularly significant to develop chemical and thermo-chemical pretreatment and pulping processes.

  • Eine Person in einem weißen Kittel hält ein Glasgefäß mit blauer Flüssigkeit und eine Petrischale mit einer Kultur

    Biotechnical and chemical conversion processes

Chemical products can be produced not only from crude oil but also from biomass. To do so, however, they have to be biotechnologically and/or chemically converted and further processed. At the Thünen Institute, we are working to develop and evaluate the best possible pathways from raw materials to products.

  • Biobasiertes Polymer wird in eine Form gegossen

    Bio-based polymers and materials

Without synthetic polymers, our lives would be hard to imagine. We evaluate and develop sustainable and bio-based alternatives for applications such as adhesives, fiber composites, polyurethane foams and wood-polymer materials.
