Building materials for affordable housing made from bio-based and recycling resources (BioHome)

"BioHome - Building materials for social housing from bio-based and recycled raw materials" is a three-country research and teaching project with the aim of developing the first composite materials based on bio- and secondary raw materials in countries in sub-Saharan Africa. BioHome integrates into the strategy project of the Federal German government "Partnerships for sustainable solutions with Sub-Saharan Africa" and is coordinated by the Thünen Institute.

Background and Objective

The African building industries consume an enormous amount of wood, steel and concrete. In many Sub‑Saharan countries these construction materials are imported from non-African producers.

The project at the University of Hamburg, Stellenbosch University and the Addis Ababa Institute of Technology faces these challenges. BioHome aims to combine secondary resources, such as fly ash and post-consumer thermoplastic waste with lignocellulosic feed-stocks, e.g. invasive plants, agricultural residues and burnt plantation wood.

Approach

The Thünen Institute coodinates the BioHome pject. Further content details can be found on the project website at the University of Hamburg: http://www.biohome.uni-hamburg.de/
