The Institute of Sea Fisheries of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries in Bremerhaven is looking for the following position for 18 months starting 16.04.2024 if possible:

Postdoc researcher position (m/w/d)

in full-time employment as a part of the international project GES4SEAS (Achieving good environmental status for maintaining ecosystem services by assessing integrated impacts of cumulative pressures).

The Thünen Institute advises the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) regarding the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and is actively involved in the implementation processes of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

GES4SEAS is funded by the EU framework program Horizon 2020 and aims to guide marine governance processes on minimizing human pressures and their impacts on coastal and marine biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, while maintaining the sustainable delivery of ecosystem services. GES4SEAS will develop an innovative toolbox, tested, validated and demonstrated, in the context of an adaptive ecosystem-based management (EBM). The Thünen Institute is co-leading the case study work package, where European case studies co-develop, test and apply models to assess the combined impact of human pressures and climate change on achieving Good Environmental Status (GES).

The successful candidate will be expected to review and develop essential ocean/biodiversity variables (EOV/EBVs) as well as to assess their status in relation to spatio-temporal dynamics of human pressures. This work will significantly contribute to the development and implementation of an operational framework to monitor the risk of cumulative impacts of human pressures on ecosystem functions and services at a European scale. In addition, the candidate is expected to occasionally advise PhD students, engage actively with stakeholders if needed, deliver and contribute to project reports, communicate with project partners, coordinate and organise work tasks, participate in respective expert working groups as well as publish and disseminate project results.

  • Analysis of knowledge gaps and integration of results across multiple case studies,
  • Contribution to the development of management recommendations and mitigation measures,
  • Contribution to project management, reporting, publication, and communication of scientific results.
