The Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forests and Fisheries, Rostock is seeking to fill the following position at the earliest possible date of a

researcher (m/f/d)

in the BMBF-funded project "Marine ecological-economic systems in global change: Responsibility for regime change and sustainability” (marEEchange). The position is limited until the end of the project on October 31, 2025 and may be extended up to a total duration of 2 years, subject to a cost-neutral extension. The position can be used to prepare for a PhD.

The advertised position deals with the social-ecological system of cod in the western Baltic Sea, which is exploited by a multisectoral fishery (commercial and recreational). The focus of this position is the representative survey and mapping of nature's contribution to people by different user groups (anglers, fishermen, tourists, residents) and the influence of ecological and infrastructural factors on these contributions.

At the Thünen-Institut of Baltic Sea Fisheries you will be part of an interdisciplinary team of fisheries biologists, survey statisticians, GIS experts and social scientists. The work will be carried out in cooperation with a project team in the marEEchange project network, in particular Prof. Dr. Robert Arlinghaus, Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), Berlin; Prof. Dr. Martin Quaas, German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv), Leipzig and Prof. Dr. Christian Möllmann, Institute of Marine Ecosystem and Fishery Sciences, University of Hamburg.

The work includes in particular:

  • Development and implementation of a survey to identify the nature contributions to people (NCPs)
  • Statistical evaluation and further development of the analytical framework for recording the nature contributions to people
  • Presentation of the project results at national stakeholder meetings and international conferences
  • Preparation of scientific publications for submission to international peer-reviewed journals
  • Participation in the preparation of project reports

We expect from you:

  • University degree in psychology, social science, sustainability science, human geography, environmental science or in a related field
  • Proven experience in quantitative data analysis
  • If possible, experience in planning and conducting surveys
  • Proof of peer-reviewed, international publications
  • Good knowledge of statistical analysis techniques, as well as answering complex, multivariate questions using R and/or SPSS
  • Creativity, a wealth of ideas and the ability to work independently and in a result-oriented manner within the institute's project team, combined with strong cooperation and communication skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and German is preferred
  • High flexibility and a willingness to travel regionally and internationally

The employment contract is governed by the provisions of the collective agreement for the civil service (TVöD tariff area east). Payment of the fee is made according to the tariff group 13 TVöD.
