Bioinformatician (m/f/d)

The analysis of natural genetic variation of forest trees, their adaptation to different environments and genomic methods for trait improvement are important topics in the Genome Research group. To this end, we employ different high-throughput sequencing technologies in combination with new bioinformatic tools. We establish efficient data management and bioinformatic analyses via the high-performance computing (HPC) cluster of the Thünen Institute. In the end, we hope to contribute to the development of more stable and sustainable forest ecosystems of the future.

Your tasks:

  • Administration of the Linux system of the Thünen Institute of Forest Genetics as part of the central HPC cluster, especially user and software management and support
  • Development and implementation of different bioinformatics pipelines
  • Functional and structural genomics analyses, addressing molecular, evolutionary and population genomics questions
  • Establishment of algorithms using artificial intelligence (AI), especially machine learning, artificial neural networks and deep learning
  • Analysis of large phenotypic datasets, e.g., terrestrial laser scanning data or spectral images from drones
  • Assistance with planning of the bioinformatics methodology and research data management for new project proposals
  • Maintenance of databases
  • Publication of results and writing of grant proposals

Your profile:

  • University degree (Master of Science or university diploma) in bioinformatics
  • Experience with Linux system administration
  • Experience with scientific software development
  • Extensive knowledge of data analysis of RNA- and DNA-Seq data
  • Experience with population genomics methods
  • Knowledge of the development and support of databases and web applications
  • Enthusiasm for open science and high motivation to push forward the boundaries of current knowledge
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience with plant genetics is advantageous
  • Knowledge of using AI is advantageous

The employment is governed by the Wage Agreement for Public Services (TVöD-Bund). Salary is up to category 13 (E13) TVöD. Part-time employment is generally possible.
