The Institute of Fisheries Ecology of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Bremerhaven is looking for a full-time, permanent staff member to co-lead the Aquaculture Department beginning at the next possible date

With our research, we aim to contribute to making the development of aquaculture sustainable and future-proof. At the same time, we advise the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and other authorities on all aquaculture matters. The future position holder should represent the Aquaculture Department within the Thünen Institute and externally, further develop research performance, and strengthen the Institute's advisory expertise in this area.

The future staff member will represent the Aquaculture Department within the institute, further expand research activities and strengthen the institute's advisory expertise in this area.

Job description: 

  • Scientific advice to the respective departments at the BMEL on various aquaculture topics,
  • Research on the development and optimization of aquaculture of freshwater and marine organisms,
  • Research on aquaculture and environment interactions,
  • Fundraising for and participation in third-party funded projects in the above-mentioned research areas,
  • Participation in international committees, like the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM), OSPAR Commission and European Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Organization (EFARO).

Your profile:

  • Completed university degree with doctorate (PhD) in aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries biology or related field, but with a clear connection to aquaculture,
  • Experience in acquisition and management of projects on aquaculture-related topics,
  • Consultancy expertise,
  • Willingness to travel domestic and abroad,
  • Experience in managing employees and students is expressly desired, the willingness to manage employees is required,
  • Strong cooperation and communication skills,
  • Strong publication record in recognised journals,
  • Good knowledge of German and English (each comparable to level B2 GeR) as well as good oral and written communication skills. If the required language level is not available at the time of recruitment, this can be made up for during the probationary period. In this case, the employment contract would initially be limited to two years for the purpose of probation.

We offer a very interesting job in applied research at the interface between science and policy advice, the results of which also meet with great public interest; a high degree of personal creative freedom as well as intensive interdisciplinary and international cooperation. The institute in Bremerhaven has modern aquaculture research facilities with recirculation aquaculture systems (freshwater and marine; warm and cold water) as well as a coldwater flow-through system and associated laboratories.

Up to two semester hours per week of teaching at colleges and universities can be counted towards the working time.

Part-time employment is generally possible.

The position is classified in pay group A 15 BBesO. Assignment to a position in pay group A 15 BBesO is carried out in accordance with the legal provisions governing civil servants and career paths. For applicants who do not meet the career-related requirements for federal civil servants upon hiring, an employment relationship will be established according to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD) in pay group 15 TVöD. There is an option to enter into a civil servant relationship at a later date, provided that the legal, career-related, and budgetary requirements are met.
