The Institute of Farm Economics of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Braunschweig is offering a full-time position (currently 39 hours per week) for a

Junior Researcher (f/m/d)

(PhD Candidate)

 

in the research project „ International Comparative Analysis of Competitiveness of fruit, vegetable and wine grape production in changing business environment“.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible and is limited to 4 years. The position is directed at promoting the academic qualification and includes the possibility to use own research results from the project for writing a PhD thesis. The Thünen-Institute therefore maintains cooperations with different universities in Germany. The temporal contract-limitation is based on § 2 Abs. 1 S. 1 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

Responsibilities:

  • Identification of the most important recent changes in framework conditions for the production of fruits, vegetables and/or wine grapes, e.g. legal conditions with respect to labour or environment, climate change and extreme weather events, new technologies in the area of digitalisation and automation.
  • Collect data on typical production systems in the context of agri benchmark Horticulture and organization of regional workshops with stakeholders
  • Identification of adaptation strategies in cooperation with local scientific partners (case studies in different countries)
  • Economic analysis of different farm level options for adaptation to changed framework conditions
  • Preparation of reports, lectures and academic publications 

Your specialist profile

  • University graduate (Univ.-Dipl./M. Sc.) in agricultural or horticultural science (specialising in agricultural economics or agribusiness or the business or social science of agriculture) or comparable degree subjects
  • Experience of the business analysis of agricultural enterprises
  • Practical knowledge of specialty crop production systems and practical experience within the context of fruit, vegetable or wine grape production are of advantage
  • Experience of team work is desired

  • Ability to analyse complex contexts, focused working style, critical judgement
  • High degree of motivation, independent initiative and talent for organisation as well as good time management
  • Ability to work independently, as member of our team and according to the requirements of the project
  • Ability to present topics and results clearly and comprehensively for different target groups in oral or written form
  • Very good German and English language skills is a condition. Additional knowledge of other languages (e.g. Chinese, Polish, Spanish) will be appreciated.
  • Willingness and ability to travel in Germany and abroad (driving licence and willingness to fly), in conjunction with high flexibility
