Scientist (m/f/d)

in the joint research project “Solar-Aquaculture Habitats as Resource-Efficient and Integrated Multilayer Production Systems" (SHRIMPS), aquaculture subproject. The position is to be filled as soon as possible and is limited to the fixed term 14.08.2022.

The SHRIMPS research project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF under the “CLIENT II” program (International Partnerships for Sustainable Innovations) and aims at roofing aquaculture facilities in Southern Vietnam with photovoltaic panels for multiple use of space and adaption of the aquaculture system to climate change by providing shade and reducing water consumption. This interdisciplinary project is coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, further partners are Viet Uc Seafood Group, Nong Lam University in Ho-Chi-Minh City, GIZ as well as companies and institutes from energy and photovoltaics sector in Vietnam and Germany. Aquaculture research will be carried out in close collaboration with Viet Uc Seafood Group and the Faculty of Fisheries at Nong Lam University. The specific target is to evaluate the effect of roofing of aquaculture facilities for shrimps and Pangasius, defining maximum shading level, and developing rearing and feeding strategies for roofed aquaculture systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Quantification of water exchange rates and water quality (physical and chemical parameters) in intensive aquaculture systems in the Mekong region in Southern Vietnam: Open-air systems, systems with transparent roofing and those with photovoltaic panels on the roof; evaluation of production parameters (growth, survival, feed conversion, product quality).
  • Quantification and chemical analysis of natural food in the systems
  • Experiments on BioFloc aquaculture for shrimps and Pangasius
  • Adaption of the rearing and feeding regime for intensive aquaculture facilities
  • Studies on biological aspects of application of photovoltaic systems by small-scale aquaculture farms under semi-intensive management
  • Collection of data for biological analysis of nutrient and material flows
  • Participation in workshops and meetings within the project consortium as well as presentation of results in national and international conferences
  • Writing of reports and publications in international, peer-reviewed Journals

Professional Requirements:

  • University degree (M.Sc., or equivalent) in Fisheries Biology, Biological Oceanography, Environmental Sciences, Agricultural Biology or Agriculture with specialization in Animal Science or related degree programs, preferably PhD
  • Preferably knowledge in tropical hydrobiology and aquaculture
  • Experience in quantitative chemical and biological methods
  • Experience in field research in the tropics
  • Unrestricted fitness for work in the tropics
  • Knowledge in statistical methods and software as well as MS Office
  • Very good English language skills (written and spoken), basic knowledge of German is an additional asset

Personal Requirements:

  • Working independently and in a structured way
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and intercultural team
  • Ability to analyse complex situations at the overlap between biology, production systems, environment and economy
  • Willingness and ability to familiarise with new topics and methods
  • Teamworking and communication skills
  • Fexibility and willingness to undertake extended business trips to rural areas in the south of Vietnam

The employment contract is governed by the provisions of the collective agreement for civil service (TVöD). Remuneration is in accordance with tariff-category 13 TVöD. Part-time employment is possible in principle, subject to fulfillment of all requirements of the job.
