OF Baltic Sea Fisheries

Teaching

Many members of staff of the Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries contribute to teaching at the universities of Rostock, Hamburg, Kiel and Berlin. We

  • supervise trainees, BSc, MSc and PhD students working on fish and fishery related topics
  • conduct a course within the MSc course integrative zoology at Rostock University and
  • contribute to various modules of marine biology master courses at Rostock University (e.g. PM8 and PM10).

Graduation theses

The Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries in Rostock offers supervision of bachelor and master/diploma theses as part of its research activities in cooperation with universities.

Our topics are aimed at students of fisheries biology, marine biology, biology, mathematics/statistics, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences and engineering (e.g. electronics and marine engineering) or related disciplines. We also offer topics for socio-economic studies that may be of interest to students with backgrounds in economics and social sciences.

  • the realization of a highly interesting thesis in applied fisheries research and fish ecology, the results of which are also of great interest to the public and provide the basis for sustainable management of marine fish stocks      
  • intensive, individual supervision and integration into the existing working groups
  • a very well equipped, modern working environment
  • a high degree of autonomy and creative development, access to extensive data series and archive material and the possibility to collect data yourself
  • a high degree of research interest, flexibility, teamwork and communication skills, sense of responsibility and independence
  • the willingness to publish the gained knowledge in an international journal (with our support) if the quality is adequate
  • good knowledge of mathematical-statistical evaluation methods and good English skills

Although employment as a student assistant is not a necessary prerequisite for writing a thesis at the Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries, it has been shown that participation in one of our regularly scheduled research trips or working with us in the laboratory is very beneficial for collaboration.
