On September 17 and 18, 2025, an interdisciplinary conference on current developments and applications of artificial intelligence took place at the Thünen Institute Forum in Braunschweig. Our team from the current research project “WoodFiberID” participated with a poster presentation entitled “How can a machine-learning system be trained to distinguish between softwoods even though the characteristics are particularly similar?” The aim of the work presented is to train AI models so that they can reliably recognize even very subtle differences in the anatomical characteristics of softwoods. In addition to methodological and technical applications of AI, topics such as green AI, legal aspects within the framework of the EU AI Regulation, the use of AI in education and knowledge management, and interfaces between science and practice were also discussed at the event.
