The Variation of quantitative anatomical features due to carbonization and their impact on size classes for charcoal identification

In March 2025, a publication of the Thünen Institute of Wood Research was published in the Woodscience and Technology Journal on the topic of variation and change in the size classes of anatomical structural features in the process of charring of wood. The publication contributes to the identification of charcoal in the context of the use of the IAWA list of microscopic characteristics for the identification of hardwood, which was compiled by the IAWA committee in 1989.  The anatomical studies on 30 different wood species show that there is a considerable loss of wood volume during the charring process. In particular, the results indicate a shift in size classes, with most of the taxa studied losing volume to varying degrees from solid wood to charcoal.
