New global study examines the drivers behind changes in natural and planted forests

Forests are essential for biodiversity, climate regulation, and livelihoods. But what influences whether forests are lost, preserved, or expanded?

As part of the GEOS-EUDR project, the Thünen Institute of Forestry assessed 21 global forest and tree cover datasets to evaluate their suitability for verifying compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).


In a collaborative effort with colleagues from Switzerland and Austria, we examined data from Forest Accountancy Data Networks in the DACH region between 2015 and 2022.

At this year's COP30 World Climate Conference in Belém agriculture and forest protection are also on the agenda. The Thünen Institute is supporting the negotiations on the agriculture work programme and presenting findings on the impact of the EUDR.
