Tarajoq for Walther Herwig III, 490th journey

Duration: 15 to 29 September 2025

Area: Marine areas off East and Southwest Greenland

Purpose: Stock surveys on Greenland groundfish stocks

The research programme of this voyage with the Greenlandic Tarajoq replaces the 490th voyage of the Walther Herwig III. It includes fisheries biology studies of the Greenlandic cod and redfish stocks as well as other ecologically important demersal fish species. These serve as a basis for the development of improved management and utilisation strategies. In addition to the standard fishing hauls, the aim of the biological-oceanographic investigations is the sampling of zooplankton (= animal plankton) off East Greenland and oceanographic measurements at selected fishing positions and transects (= several positions along a line) or international standard positions.

For the first time, the work will focus on East and Southwest Greenland in order to better understand ecosystem-relevant processes in these areas. In contrast to previous years, some areas off West Greenland, which could only rarely be reached in recent years due to the changed climatic conditions and resulting weather patterns, will no longer be sampled. In contrast to previous voyages with the Walther Herwig III, fishing is carried out day and night with a bottom trawl.
