As part of the ‘Ortswechsel’ series on Monday, 28 April, from 7 to 9 p.m., scientists from the fields of business and communication will discuss how influence is created on and through communication. What are the effects of misinformation? How can facts and information be passed on in a trustworthy manner? Which possibilities does art offer as a form of communication to promote democracy and what influence on politics, for example, can actually be good? Prof. Dr. Hiltrud Nieberg from the Thünen Institute of Farm Economics, Prof. Martin Krenn, PhD from the HBK Braunschweig and Dr. Patrick Zerrer from the University of Bremen will answer these questions. This time, the event will take place at the Braunschweig University of Art. Further information can be found on the homepage of the Haus der Wissenschaft.
Not only the communications industry, but also agriculture is facing major challenges. Agricultural businesses have to deal with growing social and economic pressure, climate change and the consequences of biodiversity loss. On 29 April, NDR-Info will be recording an episode of its programme “Wissenschaft aus Braunschweig” on the topic of agriculture under pressure from 7 to 8.30 p.m. at the Haus der Wissenschaft in Braunschweig with an audience. Ecotoxicologist Prof. Dr. Christoph Schäfers, agricultural economist Prof. Dr. Oliver Mußhoff, sociologist Prof. Dr. Claudia Neu and Maja Mogwitz, PR consultant for agricultural companies, will discuss possible solutions for farmers and how these can be implemented in a socially responsible way.
The Thünen Institute highlights women in agriculture
Women face particular challenges in agriculture. In addition to working on the farm, they often also bear a large part of the responsibility for childcare and elderly care and take on voluntary roles in the village community. In a study on women in agriculture, scientists from the Thünen Institute, together with the University of Göttingen and the German Rural Women's Association, analysed the current living situation of women in rural areas. The pictures of the female farmers taken during the study will be shown in the exhibition ‘Frauen.Leben.Landwirtschaft’ in the Wissenschaftsschaufenster Braunschweig from mid-June. In the run-up to the exhibition, Dr. Zazie von Davier, a scientist at the Thünen Institute of Farm Economics, and Anna Tiessen, a photographer with a specialisation in agriculture, will discuss what they learned about the women in the process and how, for example, policy can better support women in agriculture. The conversation is a live recording for the Thünen podcast ‘45 Minuten Zukunft’. It will take place on May 5th at 5.30 pm (note: this is a new date!) in the Wissenschaftsschaufenster, Waisenhausdamm 8. Guests and their questions are very welcome.
From mid-June, the Thünen Institute will then take over the Wissenschaftsschaufenster Braunschweig for two months. In addition to the photo exhibition ‘Frauen.Leben.Landwirtschaft’, which will be opened by Thünen President Prof. Dr. Birgit Kleinschmit on 23 June at 6 pm, there will be numerous events for young and old. All information can be found on our homepage.
Even more interactive science events will follow in June
Participants in this year's Salon der Wissenschaft on 18 June at the TRAFO Hub Braunschweig will also be able to talk to scientists from the Braunschweig region. Researchers from the fields of biodiversity, digitalisation, aviation, quantum research and climate protection, among others, will explain their projects and visions. In addition to a personal dialogue, there is also the opportunity to listen in on other conversations at any time via headphones. Dr. Marie von Meyer-Höfer from the Thünen Institute of Market Analysis and Dr. Michael Kazda from the Thünen Institute of Agricultural Technology will provide insights into their work as well. All participating scientists and their topics can be found here.
