One in three agricultural workers is a woman. Their tasks are varied: from work in the stable and the field to bookkeeping, childcare, and direct marketing. However, farm management is usually in the hands of men. Balancing farm- and family life is a great burden – at the same time, many female farmers appreciate the proximity to nature and the close-knit village community.
The Thünen Institute of Farm Economics and the University of Göttingen surveyed more than 7,000 women on farms across Germany and summarised their situation in numbers. Photographer Anna Tiessen visited and portrayed some of these female farmers at work.
What are the biggest challenges for today's female farmers? Are women in the countryside even more marginalised than in the city? Can politics provide support? Dr. Zazie von Davier, one of the lead researchers of the research project on women on farms, and photographer Anna Tiessen provide answers on stage. They will share the stories that have moved them the most and discuss the solutions they see.
