Automated image recognition systems for determining wood species using artificial intelligence are being developed under the title "WoodFiberID" in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute ITWM. The previous project "KI_Wood-ID" has already succeeded in developing AI systems for the identification of eleven hardwoods in fibrous materials. The results were published scientifically.
Now the newly launched project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture via the Fachagentur für Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V., will focus on softwoods.
The aim is to provide the image recognition systems to all testing institutes for the inspection of internationally traded wood in order to fulfill the required declaration obligations with regard to species identification in accordance with national legislation (EUTR/EUDR) in the trade and to be able to check them on a larger scale.
