Preventing wooden playground structures from fungal decayaus Holz

The naturally grown material is predestined for use in playgrounds, where it is used in a wide variety of shapes and constructions. The installation conditions for wood in playgrounds are just as varied and the associated hazard from various wood-inhabiting and wood-destroying fungi is also varied. This ranges from wood-discolouring blue stain fungi to slowly decomposing soft rot fungi to basidiomycetes, which cause brown or white rot with sometimes high degradation rates. The article provides a comprehensive overview of important fungi in wooden playgrounds, their requirements and peculiarities regarding occurrence and spread. In addition, constructive and conceptual measures to protect wood in playgrounds are highlighted.
