Colour variation in teak wood

Complex interplay between anatomical structure, chemical composition and colour variation investigated in a new study

Teak is known for its robustness, beauty and also for its different colour variations. In addition to their outstanding properties, precious wood products in particular also stand out due to their extraordinary colour. The interplay between anatomical structure, chemical composition and the resulting colour variation is not yet fully understood.

A new study on colour formation during the transition from sapwood to heartwood in cultivated teak has been published in the Journal of Wood Science and Technology. The investigations revealed increasing levels of extractable substances during the transition from sapwood to heartwood. The increase in certain constituents leads to a darker and more yellow and red colouring in the heartwood. The study is therefore a first step towards understanding the complex interactions involved in colour formation and developing a deeper understanding of the wood properties.
