Rural areas are as diverse as the people who live in them

In a video interview for the journalism magazine ‘drehscheibe’, Tobias Mettenberger explains why simplistic notions of ‘country lifestyle’ and ‘rural frustration’ fall short of providing a more accurate understanding of actual living conditions.

It was conducted during an editorial conference of the local journalism programme sponsored by the German Federal Agency for Civic Education on 15 September in Neumarkt/Oberpfalz. With his questions, editorial director Stefan Wirner followed up on a previous input presentation by Tobias Mettenberger, which focused on the typification of rural areas, demographic and social change there, challenges for basic services and the (dis)satisfaction of local people.

Both the lecture and the interview also addressed the question of how local journalists can report on rural areas in a contemporary manner.
