At the symposium, held on March 17 and 18 at Herrenhausen Palace in Hanover, projects funded by the VolkswagenStiftung under the "Perspectives on Wealth" funding format came together to discuss interim results, strengthen networks, and advance the further development of their projects.
During the symposium, Kerstin Nolte and Anika Muder from the Thünen Institute had the opportunity to meet their project partners from Kenya and Uganda and to present joint research findings from the project "Land Acquisitions and Land Inequality in Rural East Africa".
The presentation focused on the complex relationship between land acquisition and land inequality in rural East Africa: The case of Kenya illustrated how current land acquisitions, against the backdrop of historical processes, can contribute to conflict. Uganda's case demonstrates how land use change exacerbates existing inequalities – with particularly severe consequences for women and vulnerable groups. The ecological implications of these developments were also addressed.
Following the symposium, the project partners Resty Naiga (Makerere University) and Raphael Kweyu (Kenyatta University) visited the Thünen Institute, where the project team took the opportunity to discuss the next steps in the project and plan upcoming publications.
