On 16–17 March, the “2nd Workshop of Early Career Women in Economic Geography and Spatial Economics” took place in London. The workshop aims to support women-led research by bringing together advanced PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers working in the fields of economic geography and spatial economics. Among the ten participants selected through a competitive application process, the Thünen Institute was represented twice by Dimitria Freitas and Anna Kremer.

Dimitria Freitas presented a recent study on the relocation of public employment in Bavaria as part of the “Heimatstrategie” and its economic impacts. Using an empirical analysis and a quantitative spatial model, she finds positive effects for both the origin and destination regions. The outcome variables considered include employment, unemployment, and population size.

Anna Kremer presented a study on the influence of local diversity on the innovation capacity of German municipalities. She measures local diversity based on regional origin using a proxy derived from surname distribution. The estimates show a positive relationship with the number of patents generated. This positive effect is linked to knowledge externalities. The working paper can be found here (https://nbn-resolving.org/urn:nbn:de:bsz:14-qucosa2-1004928).
