During the three-day workshop in Kampala (Uganda), project leaders and early-career researchers from Makerere University (Uganda), Kenyatta University (Kenya), and the Thünen Institute of Rural Economics (Germany) came together to develop methodological approaches and the procedures for the upcoming field research within project “Land Acquisitions and Rising Land Inequalities in Rural East Africa” (LARLIREA), which is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.
The LARLIREA project examines how large-scale land acquisitions influence the distribution of wealth and social inequalities in rural East Africa. It focuses on the impacts of these land transactions on local communities—particularly on livelihoods, food security, and social well-being—which are being investigated through qualitative field studies and quantitative secondary analyses.
The workshop recently held in Kampala aimed to create a shared understanding of key concepts such as “land inequality,” to define suitable qualitative and quantitative data collection tools, to establish clear standards for data management and collaboration, and to strengthen scientific exchange as well as cross-project cooperation. Initial data collection began immediately following the workshop, with further activities to take place in the coming weeks. The Thünen Institute was represented by Kerstin Nolte (online) and Anika Muder (on site in Kampala).
