Art and culture make a significant contribution to shaping life in Germany as diverse and vibrant. Beyond that, creativity and artistic work play an important role in driving innovation and regional development.

Around two million people work in the arts and creative industries – more than twice as many as in agriculture.
Artists and cultural professionals are particularly concentrated in major cities: Berlin alone accounts for nearly a quarter of all those insured through the Artists’ Social Security Fund – together with Hamburg, Munich, and Cologne, the share even reaches 40%.

But smaller cities such as Weimar or Freiburg im Breisgau, as well as some rural regions like the Wendland, have also turned into creative hotspots.

More information on this topic can be found in the current edition of Facts & Figures on the Rural Economy (in German).
