Many of the benefits society derives from forests have public good characteristics since users cannot be easily charged for them; these benefits may not be reflected in market values. It is, therefore, crucial to estimate the value that individuals place on such non-market benefits.


Our preliminary calculations for the year 2018 show that the fellings in Germany increased by 10% to 73.7 million m³ (coarse wood under bark) compared to 2017. Softwood fellings increased by 12.8% to 53.1 million m³, while hardwood fellings increased by 3.4% to 20.6 million m³.

Wood energy represents approximately half of total German wood demand. Residential wood energy consumption accounted for 49% in total wood energy consumption in 2015, even exceeding wood energy demand by the wood processing industry (22%).
