ValoFor - new Project

ValoFor: Small Forests - Big Players: Valorising small scale forestry for a bio-based economy

The ERA-NET co-funded transnational joint project started in February 2019 and has a duration of three years. The Thünen-Institute of Forest Ecosystems and the Thünen-Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics work in cooperation with the Bundesforschungszentrum für Wald in Austria, the Umeå University in Sweden, the Natural Resources Institute Finland and the Slovenian Forestry Institute. The German participation has further funding from Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe (FNR) e.V.

The aim of the project ValoFor is to understand - for all the partner countries - the contribution of small forest owners to a wood-based bioeconomy. More specifically, (1) tipping points in management behaviour are analysed, (2) effects of existent incentive schemes are evaluated, (3) potential wood provision and other ecosystem services are modelled, (4) management strategies are economically evaluated and (5) trade-offs between wood production, other ecosystem services and climate change resilience are quantified.

The Thünen-Institute of International Forestry and Forest Economics’ main task is to simulate and evaluate - for all partner countries - the effects of specific management strategies on national economy as well as on profitability of small forest enterprises and on wood provision in comparison with wood demand.
