Launch of the Survey of Roundwood-Processing Companies for 2024

As part of the ongoing task “Wood Resource Monitoring,” roundwood-processing companies will be surveyed in the coming weeks regarding their use of raw materials. The aim is to gain a comprehensive overview of wood usage in the German sawmill industry.

Across Germany, more than 3,500 sawmills will be invited in writing to participate in this full survey. Based on the data on raw wood usage, sawing volumes, and other site-specific information, it will become clear how much raw wood is actually used at the company sites. In addition, the survey results will allow structural changes to be identified and material flows to be traced.

The “Wood Resource Monitoring” project, which was initiated in 1999 at the request of wood market stakeholders and under the leadership of Prof. Udo Mantau, has become an important basis for forest and wood market policy decisions. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH) has commissioned the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, to carry out the project as an ongoing task. Dr. Jochem and Dr. Glasenapp from the Thünen Institute for Forestry will coordinate the surveys. The Association of the German Sawmill and Wood Industry (DeSH) supports this initiative.

The current survey wave is being conducted by BERENT Deutschland GmbH on behalf of the Thünen Institute for Forestry. For any questions regarding participation in this survey, please contact Thomas Loch at: rohholz@berent.com.
