New publication on the distribution of forestry subsidies in five EU countries

The use of forestry subsidies is an important instrument for achieving policy goals regarding the maintenance and improvement of forest services.

The ValoFor project investigated which forestry measures are subsidized in the EU member states Finland, Sweden, Germany, Austria and Slovenia and which forest owners received subsidies. For this purpose, subsidies paid for forestry measures from the 2014-2020 funding period of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) in the five countries were compared.

Furthermore, it was examined how the subsidy amounts were distributed among different forest ownership sizes. While the funded activities in the five countries showed a broad spectrum of ecological and management-oriented measures, it became clear that small private forest owners rarely take advantage of EAFRD funding and therefore received only a small share of funding.
