Jonas Schmitt won two awards for his dissertation and the best paper in an agricultural science journal at the European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE) conference, which is currently taking place in Bonn. GEWISOLA (Society for Agricultural Economics and Social Sciences), which has integrated its annual conference into the EAAE, presented the young scientist with the award for the best dissertation. In it, Schmitt examines how farmers can reduce weather-related crop losses by expanding the range of crops they grow – and what role insurance plays in this. It is a highly relevant work that uses innovative methodological approaches and draws on extensive empirical data. Jonas Schmitt was a doctoral student at the Thünen Institute of Farm Economics from 2020 to 2024 and wrote his thesis there and at ETH Zurich, where he is now conducting postdoctoral research.

In the course of his doctoral studies, he also wrote a paper. It was published in 2024 in Agricultural Economics, one of the leading scientific agricultural economics journals. The paper has now also been awarded the prize for best paper of 2024.
