Sphagnum moss

Sphagnum farming is one type of paludiculture, i.e. the productive use of rewetted peatlands under wet hydrological conditions. We could show that Sphagnum farming is possible on highly decomposed peat. Greenhouse gas emissions were mainly affected by water table depth and vegetation development and substantially lower than those of drained agricultural sites. Methane emissions from an irrigation polder were lower than expected, but nitrous oxide emissions occured at an inadequately dry site.
