Mortality of cod released by anglers in the Baltic Sea

Previous investigations showed that a significant number of cod caught by anglers has not reached the minimum landing size of 38 centimeters and have to be released. About 45 to 70 % of all individuals caught from boats and charter vessels are undersized.

Background and Objective

Surveys by the Thuenen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries (OF) concluded that the German recreational fishery removes a considerable amount of cod biomass from the Western Baltic cod stock (ICES SD 22-24). As a result, it is recommended that catches of recreational fisheries should be included in future stock assessments. The data showed that the annual cod catches in the Baltic recreational fishery was on average as high as 50 % of the annual landings of the German commercial fleet in the same waters between 2005 and 2010. Previous investigations showed that a significant number of cod caught by anglers has not reached the minimum landing size of 38 centimeters and have to be released. About 45 to 70 % of all individuals caught from boats and charter vessels are undersized. In spite of these high release rates, up to now there is no information about the survival rates of released cod caught by anglers. The primary goal of this study is to investigate (a) the mortality rates of undersized and released cod, (b) the effects of “Catch-and-Release” on the fish and (c) the factors that influence survival.
