Baltic Sea: How fish species composition changes along the coast throughout the year

On the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein, the Thünen Institute conducts surveys on the condition of coastal fish. This involved monthly sampling in 2021 and recording the coastal fish community at several sampling sites.

A total of 50 different coastal fish species were documented, including bottom-dwelling species such as sea scorpions and gobies, as well as fish found in the water column such as herring and mackerel. Species numbers and composition showed significant variation throughout the year.
