Setting the course together

At the kick-off conference of the Information and Coordination Centre for Fisheries Transformation (IKTF), the team introduced themselves and invited participants to help develop visions for the future of coastal fisheries.

On Friday, 13 March, the kick-off conference of the Information and Coordination Centre for Fisheries Transformation (IKTF) took place in Hamburg’s HafenCity. Around 140 guests from the sectors of practice, politics, administration, academia, business and civil society came together to discuss the challenges facing coastal fisheries and to jointly develop prospects for the future. Among the guests were also around 40 fishermen and fisherwomen from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

The conference encouraged active participation: in short presentations, guests learnt more about visions for the future and trends in coastal fisheries. A dialogue workshop focused on the participants’ perspectives: on topics such as the fishing profession, the fishing fleet, fishing ports, marine ecosystems and fisheries management, guests were able to contribute their experiences, knowledge and ideas and discuss concrete courses of action. The event concluded with a reception followed by a get-together for networking and exchange.

The IKTF Advisory Board was also established that morning. Stefan Hübner, Fisheries Officer at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH), is the new Chair of the Advisory Board.

The many ideas from the dialogue workshop are now being collated: these will provide important impetus for the IKTF’s future work.
