New publication on the Durability of Wood Exposed above Ground—Experience with the Bundle Test Method

Promising results from the last 15 years of testing

© Christian Brischke

Biological durability is an essential material property of wood intended for outdoor use. However, a suitable and standardized method for determining durability does not yet exist in Europe, although numerous methods have been used in the past. The aim of this study was to review the results and practical experience with the bundle method, which could serve as a standard method for field tests with wood. The method involves a moisture trap, creates a moderate risk of moisture-induced attack typical of use class 3, and has generated durability values for a wide range of wood-based materials.
