Terminology of strategies for preserving the value of resources (R). The R strategies are classified according to their ability to achieve circularity, i.e. to optimize the service life of resources.

It can be assumed that society's demand for wood will continue to increase in the future. At the same time, however, the amount provided from the forest will decrease and the composition of tree species will also change. An intensified circular economy has the potential to mobilize raw material potential from the economy and reuse it, but this requires an adaptation of the traditional, rather linear processing and utilization paths. This requires a holistic approach to resolving conflicting objectives. As the process chain of wood is complex and differs from other raw materials, general recycling strategies are not usually transferable 1:1. For this reason, wood use is often referred to as cascade use, which aims to use wood products as long, frequently and efficiently as possible in their function. In the future, companies that are able to diversify their raw material sources in a regionally adapted manner will have an advantage.
