The joint annual conference of the North German district groups of the VPM (Vereinigter Papierfachverband München) and Zellcheming (Verein der Zellstoff- und Papierchemiker und -Ingenieure) on 10.11.23 at the Barsbüttel site of the Thünen Institute of Wood Research was a complete success. The lecture program offered a diverse mix of insights into innovative approaches, field reports and research projects.

After the introduction on " Pulping possibilities of wheat straw as an alternative fiber source for the paper industry" by the Thünen Institute and the University of Hamburg and an overview of alternative paper raw materials by the Munich University of Applied Sciences, there were various insights into practice. Reports were given on a new approach to the production of paper from pineapples, on experiences with the use of grass and on insights into the recycling behavior of paper.

Finally, the research results so far on the automation of wood species identification in paper using AI were presented. The cooperation project between the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics and the Thünen Institute of Wood Research met with great interest.

The event clearly showed that the industry is striving to drive forward sustainable and innovative solutions.
