"North Sea fishing vessel of the future"

On Monday, 22 December 2025, Silvia Breher, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity presented the funding approvals for the ‘North Sea fishing vessel of the future – KuNo’ project.

The project partners are Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences (who are responsible for overall project management), the Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries, and the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park Administration.
Over the past few years, Prof. Dr. Jann Strybny from Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences in Leer and Dr. Gerd Kraus from the Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries in Bremerhaven have worked with East Frisian crab fishermen to develop a concept that will secure the future viability of German coastal fishing in the North Sea. The aim is to give new impulse to the fishing industry, which is looking to the future with some concern.

Background and Objective:

Germany's cutter and coastal fishing fleet is largely outdated. This leads to ineffiency and is increasingly a problem for a future-proof fishery. To meet the variety of coastal and cutter fishing practices in Germany and its needs, several types of new, modern fishing cutters are necessary to ensure fisheries' long-term sustainability. The Future Cutter North Sea is one of them. The interdisciplinary approach of the project brings together expertise from shipbuilding and technical, economic and social science fisheries research.

The Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries is responsible for all future fishing cutter fisheries science in the project. Our joint venture aims to establish a technical foundation for a fishery that is economically efficient, environmentally friendly and socially acceptable.

A total of ten million euros in funding is being provided by the Ministry.
