Rural Youth: Between Out-migration and Volunteering

The future of rural areas in Germany is, to a high degree, dependent on the youths who live there. There is a chance that young people will stay if they feel their region is worth living in and has the potential to develop. If not, chances are high that especially the young and mobile generation will leave.

Background and Objective

The project analyses the living situation of young people in rural areas in Germany and their perspectives on the future

Approach

Assuming that the regional conditions influence young people's chances and problems, six differently developed regions from east and west Germany were studied. The regions under focus were Friedland in Mecklenburg West Pomerania, Krummhörn in Lower Saxony, Grimma in Saxony, Furth in Bavaria, Königsee in Thuringia und Meßkirch in Baden-Wurttemberg.

Data and Methods

2,662 young people between the ages of 14 to 18 participated in a standardized online survey, shortly before their graduation from different types of schools
