The 29th Congress of the European Society for Rural Sociology took place between the 3rd to 7th of July 2023. This year's host for the approx. 400 participants was the Institut Agro Rennes-Angers, which organised the – very sustainable – event under the theme of "Crisis and Futures of Rural Areas".
Due to the pandemic, this was the first local meeting since 2019 and the conference was accordingly well attended. The Thünen Institute of Rural Economics was represented with a session on arts and cultural practitioners, where the role of arts and culture for rural development was discussed in 10 presentations. In addition to insights from Western and Central Europe, contributions from Japan and the USA were also represented.
