A choice experiment was conducted to investigate whether private forest owners in Finland, Sweden, Germany, Austria, and Slovenia would be willing to participate in contract-based payment systems for forest management practices that promote either timber production or biodiversity.

The majority of surveyed forest owners showed a clear preference for participating in payment systems to promote conservation objectives, combined with improvements in profitability and environmental attributes. Differences across countries were found in the level of contract payments preferred.
