Sustainable use of the European eel

Within the European Data Collection Framework (DCF) we collect biological data of eels from all German river basins. The data are used for the quantification of eel populations in our waters and are also included in the international stock assessment.

In cooperation with other German research institutes we also investigate the load of organic pollutants, heavy metals and parasites in eels. The results of these studies aim at a better understanding of the relationship between habitat and spawner quality. In this context we also investigate the influence of individual migratory behaviour and habitat choice on the quality of spawners. The primary objective of these investigations is the development of effective measurements for the sustainable management of this important and fascinating fish species.

    • abstract: The status of the European Eel stock is considered critical. Yet, most of the required data are based on rough estimates or model assumptions. As part of a europe-wide network, we are working on the standardized collection of age-structure and growth in all relevant German inland waters in order to provide a solid data base for eel stock assesment and improve future management measures.

    • abstract: The aim of the current European eel stock management is to increase the number of silver eels that escape from inland and coastal waters and contribute to the spawning stock. However, so far the quality of escaping silver eels is disregarded in this context. In order to make realistic valuations of the success of different management measures it is therefore necessary to as well quantify different mortality factors in certain rivers as to make precise estimates of number and quality of escaping silver eels.

    • abstract: The European eel is said to be a catadromous migratory fish, which ascends into rivers to grow after it has completed its larval migration across the Atlantic Ocean to the European coasts. Nowadays, this simple behavioral pattern is more and more questioned. The migratory behavior of eels during the continental life phase has not been investigated yet and nothing is known about its influence on eel growth and health.
