Examination of the effect of data aggregation on modeled SOC sequestration with Century

Within the scope of the FACCE JPI MACSUR we examine the effects of land use and climate change on the humus contents of agricultural soils in Europe and integrate advanced approaches into crop models.

Background and Objective

Soil organic carbon plays a vital role in climate risk assessment because of its meaning for soil fertility and soil structural stability in agro ecosystems on the on hand and its sensitivity to climate change and land use on the other hand. In crop models the strong correlation between SOC and bulk density, their control on soil hydraulic properties are significant for estimating water and nutrition storage and crop growth. A detailed climate change risk assessment for future yield stability needs to assess the risk of changes of soil organic  carbon stocks in dependence on predicted natural and anthropogenic conditions and the impact those conditions will have on crop growth processes.

Approach

The sub project aims to inventory and collect data suitable to initialize biophysical models (RothC, Century) on a Paneuropean scale and to validate these models. Tested models will be applied to simulate trends in soil organic carbon stocks and related yield and yield stability for scenarios with respect to prospective climate and land use/ land use intensity scenarios in Europe and neighboring countries. To quantify the uncertainty of regionalization studies examining the influence of validation and driving data uncertainty will be performed.
