Science Slam at PTB: With stuffed animals as props, Michael Kazda brought research on barn climate to life.

On Saturday, September 13, 2025, the Thünen Institute of Agricultural Technology was represented at the Open House of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig. The institute participated with a science slam and an information stand to present current research results from agricultural technology.

Science explained in an entertaining way

Michael Kazda entertained the audience at the science slam with his presentation “How loud is the smell in the barn?”. He vividly explained how photoacoustic sensors measure ammonia (NH₃) in barns—a crucial factor for animal welfare, as excessive NH₃ levels can affect animal health. Using practical examples from agriculture, he showed how modern measurement technology makes barns healthier and more sustainable.

The presentation was interactive: the audience was playfully involved with humor, little surprises, and creative interludes. This allowed scientific content to be conveyed in an entertaining way without losing any of the technical substance. Even interested laypeople were able to follow the context well and gain an insight into current research topics at the Thünen Institute.

Other topics from the Thünen Institute

At the Thünen Institute's booth, Katrin Agethen provided information on greenhouse gas emissions in beef production and possible strategies for reduction. Visitors were given an overview of various research areas at the Thünen Institute, whose main campus is directly adjacent to the PTB.

At the same time, the PTB offered an extensive program with laboratory tours, interactive stations, and insights into its work on quantum technologies, precision measurement, and climate research. The contributions of the Thünen Institute thus complemented the diverse program of the PTB perfectly.
