However, knowledge gaps remain to which degree, and at which scales and levels, stakeholder participation takes place during the modeling cycle.
Based on a systematic review of 79 studies focusing on SESs within agricultural or forestry domains, selected findings reveal that participation is mostly carried out at lower spatial levels (local and regional). Moreover, stakeholders commonly participated in model parameterization and calibration, but rarely in model results communication.
A better documentation of the considered levels and scales of participation as well as related modelling appears necessary to make SESs modeling more transparent and reproducible. Due to the complex nature of such modelling studies, it is important to develop a framework for the entire process in line with the objectives of the study. Such a framework will help to delineate the various scales and their interactions, and will structure the participation alongside the modeling activities accordingly.
