New publication on small-scale private forest owners · Factors influencing contact with professional foresters

In Germany, 24% of the forest area is owned by small private forest owners (SPFOs), each possessing less than 20 hectares of forest. In addition to structural deficits, SPFOs often lack the expertise to achieve their goals and sustainably manage their forests. Professional foresters can provide crucial support in this regard.

As part of the InA-PW project, we investigated various factors influencing contact with professional foresters. Our findings indicate that SPFOs are more likely to engage with professional foresters when their management goals require technical knowledge or are linked to public funding programs; additionally, demographic factors and the perceived economic value of the forest correlate with such contact. The use of digital media is also positively associated with contact with professional foresters. Furthermore, regional differences suggest that specific forest structures at the state level influence this contact.

The study underscores the need for targeted advisory services to address the diverse needs of SPFOs.
