Nitric oxide (NO) is an intermediate and byproduct of processes of the nitrogen cycle in soil. In the atmosphere is quickly reacts to nitrogen dioxide, which is a well known air pollutant that is, e.g., also released from combustion processes. Gokul PrasadMathivanan (Scientist at our institute until March 2025) has searched the literature for published studies of NO emissions from agricultural soils. There is a lack of representative data but he still derived new emission factors. Overall, these are lower than prescribed by the reporting guidelines. Interestingly, the new emission factor for organic fertilizers is practically zero. The guidelines are currently being revised and our new results can be included.
