Development of Sustainable Feeds for Rainbow Trout Based on Locally Available Feed Resources in the Islamic Republic of Iran
The Islamic republic of Iran has ambitious plans of increasing the annual aquaculture production by 500 000 tonnes within the next 5 years. This requires an additional supply of aquafeeds in the same order.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has ambitious plans to expand the aquaculture sector to increase domestic supply of high quality animal protein and to generate employment and income in rural areas. The increase in aquaculture production will generate a demand for feeds in the order of 500,000 t/a. This joint project between Iranian Fisheries Science Research Institute (IFSRI) and Thünen Institute of Fisheries Ecology aims at developing environmentally friendly, low nutrient-release diets from sustainable sources, mostly locally available plant materials.
Identification of potential feed ingredients available in sufficient quantities (e.g. press cakes, ceral by-products, slaughtery by-products) |
Analysis of chemical characteristics, anti-nutrients, processing/additives and digestibility of individual ingredients |
Design of experimental diets |
Laboratory testing of high performance, low emission diet |
Field testing including assessment of effluent quality |
