Phenotypic and genetic characterisation of selected populations from a beech provenance trial (Fagus sylvatica L.)
An international network to establish a series of provenance trials with European beech was created to evaluate the genetic variation of beech.
Within the 1993/95 series, 24 test sites were established, including the sites Schädtbek (Schleswig-Holstein) and Gablitz (Lower Austria).
Six provenances were chosen in different climatic areas of Europe for a pilot study to evaluate the adaptedness and adaptability of one of the most important broad-leaved species to climate change.
Six provenances of the field trial were selected for a detailed characterisation. The growth performance, the phenotypical behaviour and soil properties were evaluated. In addition, rates of photosynthesis and transpiration, wood formation dynamics and population genetic characteristics were assessed at the same material.
