New identification guide for North Sea cephalopods

Squid are becoming increasingly important in fisheries. Landings are increasing in many European waters. In most cases, however, squid are not identified at species level.

In order to estimate fishing pressure at the species level, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is striving to obtain species-level data from commercial fisheries and also from research cruises. To support this project, the Thünen Institute has compiled a regional identification guide for the most important cephalopod species in the North Sea.
