An international symposium on new findings and methods in fisheries and marine ecology research will take place at the Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries in Bremerhaven on 9 December 2025.

The international FISHGLOB consortium will be travelling to Bremerhaven with 14 scientists. The symposium is part of an entire collaboration week on the topic of marine fish faunal diversity with the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Biodiversity (HIFMB) in Oldenburg.

During the symposium, researchers from the Thünen Institute as well as from Canada, the USA, Norway and France will give lectures. For example, they will discuss changes in the Barents Sea as a result of climate change and how sonar can be used by commercial fishing vessels in the Antarctic to observe marine mammals hunting crustaceans. Another methodological focus of the presentations will be on how mathematical-statistical approaches can be used to improve the calculations for scientific catch quota recommendations.
