Payments for watershed services (PWS) are increasingly popular tool, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. However, the degree of PWS adoption varies across countries: while frequently adopted in Latin America, water-related payment schemes do not exist in large parts of Africa and Asia.

Forestry and wood use contribute to climate mitigation. Considering Germany’s ambitious climate protection goals, it is important to know how different forest management scenarios perform with respect to climate change mitigation and which costs are involved.

Due to the ability of trees to extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and to sequester it as carbon in the biomass, forests can make a major contribution to protect the climate.

On the basis of a nationwide representative telephone survey of private forest owners and the rest of the society, the living conditions, attitudes and goals of individuals from both groups could be ascertained for the first time for a direct comparison.
